What Are Reference Thermometers?

Reference thermometers are very high-accuracy temperature sensors often with included hand-held readout instruments. Reference thermometers are calibrated to UKAS standards to provide the highest accuracy possible.

A reference thermometer can be used for a comparison calibration, where the reference thermometer and the temperature sensor to be tested are both placed in a stable heat source such as a water bath. The tested temperature sensors readings can be checked against the reference thermometers readings to determine how accurate the temperature sensor is.
