What Is A Grounded Junction?

Grounded junctions are a type of thermocouple measuring junction. A grounded junction is formed by the two thermocouple conductors being welded together with the external sheath. This forms a completely sealed junction. As the thermocouple conductors are touching the outer sheath the thermocouple is not electrically insulated and may be affected by stray EMF’s. The junction is more robust than an exposed junction and is somewhere in between exposed and insulated junctions in response time.

What is the difference between grounded and ungrounded junction?

The difference between grounded and ungrounded junctions primarily pertains to the construction and response characteristics of thermocouples or other temperature sensors:

Grounded junction:

Construction: In a grounded junction thermocouple, the sensing junction (where the two dissimilar metals are joined) is physically connected to the probe’s sheath.
Response time: Grounded junctions typically have faster response times because the junction is in direct contact with the sheath, allowing for quicker heat transfer.
Applications: Suitable for applications where fast response is critical and where the sensor can be safely connected to the ground potential of the system being measured.
Electrical noise: More susceptible to electrical noise and interference, which can affect accuracy in electrically noisy environments.

Ungrounded Junction:

Construction: In an ungrounded junction thermocouple, the sensing junction is electrically insulated from the probe’s sheath, typically using a layer of insulating material.
• Response time: Ungrounded junctions have slightly slower response times compared to grounded junctions because the heat transfer is less direct.
Applications: Preferred in electrically noisy environments or where the sensor needs to be electrically isolated from the measurement environment to prevent ground loops or interference.
• Electrical noise: Less susceptible to electrical noise, providing more stable and accurate readings in certain conditions.

Choosing between a grounded and ungrounded junction depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as the need for fast response times versus the need for electrical isolation and noise immunity.
